Einstein is here. (He’s always been here!)

Our book about Einstein is out now. It’s been a long trip from conception to publication, and I’m proud of Absent-minded Albertwhat Jerel Dye and I (along with Alison Acton and Alex Lu) have made. I’ve been talking about it a lot on the social media sites, so if you follow me there you’ve seen many excerpts. We’re celebrating its launch with some events:

Nov. 15, 7pm: Brookline Booksmith

Nov 16, 7pm: An Unlikely Story

And I’ve done a little media about it as well:

Pint o’ Comics

John Scalzi’s “The Big Idea”

The Virtual Memories Show

So if you want to learn more about what we did and why, please join us at one or more of those real or virtual places and we’ll talk about genius, science, and how those come together in comics!

Today seems like a good day for free comics: IYPT for the RSC

That’s definitely not a title built for SEO, but hey, it’s accurate. And we’re all about precision and accuracy here at G.T. Labs.

Mostly.

2019 was the International Year of the Periodical Table, and to celebrate—you know, in addition to taking part in the usual exchange of Mendeleev-themed greeting cards and transuranic chocolates—you could stop on by the Royal Society of Chemistry’s site and read comics. That’s right, comics invaded Chemistry World, and I wrote ’em. The first few are drawn by Roger Langridge, who I’ve always been a fan of and whose work on these (mostly) true stories is even more remarkable than you must expect of me to tell you how. (To paraphrase the Messenger in Much Ado About Nothing, since I feel like my part in all this is mostly as a means to introduce scientists to great artists.)

Following Roger’s work you’ll get (if you sign in) more comics by Metaphrog, Isabel Greenberg, Kate Ashwin, Nick Abadzis, and Merlin Strangeway.

Enjoy!

Astronauts! Coming in February 2020!

It’s about to get all Hawking, all day every day here at G.T. Labs, but before that happens I wanted to get this great news on the blog: Astronauts, in collaboration with Maris Wicks, is an official thing that will come out next year.

This book was a joy to do, from my first interview with Mary Cleave through the writing (I can remember struggles while making every book but this one) to seeing the first panels Maris drew. And now it’s on First Second’s official schedule. (You can preorder it here.) I sure hope readers love this one as much as Maris and I do.

Cheers to her, cheers to our protagonist Mary, and cheers to exploration.

Feynman's Manhattan Project I.D. Photo. This is merely link-blogging, but I think you’ll forgive that once you’ve seen Alex Wellerstein’s terrific post on I.D. photos for the Manhattan Project. I read his blog regularly, and you should too.

And yes, that’s you-know-who, looking like he came straight from central casting to play Boy Genius.

Live, from the Ann Arbor District Library: Comics Are Great!

Thanks to Jerzy Drozd, I got to talk about comics with Nick Abadzis (and Jerzy as well)! It was a lot of fun, and as is the case every time I talk to Nick and/or Jerzy, I learned stuff.

Levitation

I wrote a book about levitation, but that was more about mechanical engineering and psychology than physics. Here’s the real thing, and the coolest video you’ll see today:
