Fallout Extras

Production material from Fallout

Below, you see Jeffrey Jones’ preliminary sketch for Fallout‘s cover. You’ll note that Szilard’s position changes and he adopts a more subtle pose in the final version. Jeffrey did the cover in pen and ink (click on the image to see this stage), and then finished it in color using transparent oils. Luckily, the printer did a fine job in reproducing the beautiful palette and brush strokes.

Fallout: J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leo Szilard, and the political science of the atomic bomb.

If you’ve seen the book itself, you’ve also seen the lovely painted work by Janine Johnston. The stor pages in “Birth” were done in ink and wash, so what you see is how she worked. But she painted most of the backgrounds she did for Jeff Parker’s last panels in “Work” in full color. Now you can see them in their original, abstract, glory. You can click on the thumbnails to get larger versions.
